Positive Exercise Gym Dialogue

Having an “in your face” exercise gym dialogue with your trainer is a great way to make a fitness relationship more challenging and fun. Often when we think of working out, the last thing we think about is having an “in your face” conversation with our personal trainer. However, it’s important that we don’t take ourselves or our training for granted. Our trainer is there to help us build and maintain our fitness goals, so it’s important to let them know how much we appreciate their efforts in helping us to reach our fitness goals.


This doesn’t mean that our trainers should be asking us questions all of the time. After all, it’s their job to help us understand what’s going on with our bodies and how to support our fitness goals. At times, though, it can feel like we’re talking too much and that the conversation is becoming more one-sided. When this occurs, here are some things that coaches can ask their clients:


– Listen to feedback about our exercise program. Our personal trainers are there to help us find the right exercise routine for us. If they make suggestions or offer criticism, listen to the feedback carefully. Don’t jump to a particular training idea just because someone else has suggested it. Taking feedback seriously and seeking out and using constructive criticism can go a long way to making the exercise program better.


– Ask them what you can do to get the most from your exercise class. If someone suggests changes to your workout routine, be sure to ask them for specifics. For instance, if someone suggests adding a spotter, find out specifically how that will impact your exercise class. Keep in mind that all coaches have their own individual styles. In general, trainers tend to have a positive impact on the students they coach. So be sure to pick up their suggestions and act on them accordingly.


– Listen to advice given by other trainers. The exercise gym dialogue you will encounter includes many conversations about other trainers and their techniques. These can range from anything from choosing the wrong workout routine to how to reach your fitness goals. It is wise to pay attention to such discussions.


– Listen to your own personal fitness goals. Asking yourself what your exercise goals are can go a long way to setting your exercise gym dialogue going. If you are set on a specific exercise routine, such as a weight-loss regimen, be sure to express those desires explicitly. If you don’t like a specific workout routine, talk to your instructor. There is no substitute for experience.


– Look for support. Building a network of support with your own personal trainer is important for success. If you are having trouble achieving an exercise goal, be willing to look for another trainer who might be able to help. Be sure to thank others in the gym for their assistance. A few simple conversations can go a long way toward making your exercise gym dialogue as productive as possible.


– Take criticism seriously. When you first start an exercise program, it may seem that everyone in the gym is against you. Don’t take this attitude. In the course of your exercise gym dialogue, learn to differentiate the people who are supportive and encouraging you from those who are critical and discourage you from your efforts.


– Don’t make the mistake of setting goals to accomplish at the expense of being realistic. It’s easy to get sidetracked and lose track of the real goals for your exercise routine. Realistically set yourself some achievable goals to begin with, such as losing a pound each week.


– Avoid being critical. Don’t use language that will hurt someone’s feelings. It’s OK to mention how other members of the gym are not following the same goals as you. But don’t be nasty about it. If you are using negative words or actions, that sends a different message than if you’d just mentioned how you feel about the exercise program overall.


Your exercise gym dialogue can be positive and constructive if you approach it the right way. The more open you are, the more helpful others will be. And you can build a successful exercise routine when others are on your team.
